Nauset Finishes Restoration of Iconic Harvard Square Apartment Complex

Nauset Construction Completes Historic Renovation in Cambridge's Harvard Square Area.

N
auset Construction has completed the restoration of a six-unit, 15,000-square-foot multifamily property at 382-392 Harvard Street in Cambridge, MA. The Queen Anne-style wood-frame building, originally constructed in 1889 as the Richard Hapgood House, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The renovated property features six spacious suites, each with a private bath and an additional half bath for guests. Units offer open-concept living areas, high-end appliances, recessed lighting, and access to outdoor spaces like porches or decks. Nauset worked closely with the project team to meet strict renovation standards set by the Cambridge Historical Commission and National Park Service.

The complex renovation involved demolishing the interior down to the original framing, excavating the basement, and lowering the foundation walls to create space for a lower living level. The second-floor units were extended into former attic spaces, maximizing available space within the existing footprint. New systems were installed, including fire protection sprinklers, plumbing, HVAC, electrical service, and power.

Exterior restoration included new red cedar siding, wood trim elements, and synthetic slate shingle roofing. Custom woodworking was required for intricate porches and exterior features, such as balusters and columns. The renovation also featured the installation of new energy-efficient clad wood windows and porches.

Located near Harvard University's campus, the property boasts a Walk Score of 98 and Bike Score of 99, making it an attractive option for students. Nauset Construction President Anthony Papantonis said, "Renovating historic properties is a source of pride for our teams. This project showcases our expertise in historic renovation, multifamily development, and managing complex urban sites."
