ello, the iconic Madison Avenue eatery that was a magnet for A-listers and shuttered after 25 vibrant years, is reviving in Midtown. Thomas Makkos, real estate mogul and former hot dog franchise king, has secured a lease at 62 W. 55th St., part of SL Green's sleek 1350 Sixth Ave. office tower.
The new Nello will occupy 2,300 square feet on the ground floor, with an additional 1,500 square feet below ground, and a spacious sidewalk patio. This prime location, nestled between Fifth and Sixth avenues alongside Alain Ducasse's Benoit Bistro and Michael's, is poised to attract its former celebrity clientele.
Makkos aims to recreate Nello's allure, which once drew in Jennifer Lopez, Uma Thurman, Harrison Ford, Pierce Brosnan, and Jennifer Aniston. However, one notable absence will be President Trump, who reportedly wooed Melania there during his frequent visits in 2002.
The new menu is still a mystery, but it's unlikely to feature the $275 pasta dishes that once made headlines. The original Nello was infamous for its pricey offerings, including a $55 asparagus plate. Despite controversy surrounding its liquor license during the COVID lockdowns, the restaurant maintained a flair for showmanship, even installing giant red teddy bears on its outdoor seats in 2020.
Sources indicate that rent at the new location falls within the $250-$300 per square-foot range. Meridian Retail Leasing president James Famularo brokered the deal, citing Nello's reputation as an institution deserving of a prime location.
