T
he Ellis Block Apartment Community in New Britain, CT officially opened its doors with a grand ceremony attended by state and local officials. The $85 million redevelopment project transformed a historic manufacturing complex into a vibrant 154-unit affordable apartment community.
Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont and Mayor Erin Stewart joined WinnCompanies executives for the ribbon-cutting event. The adaptive reuse effort converted four buildings into modern one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments catering to young professionals, middle-income households, and seniors on fixed incomes.
"This project has taken a neglected property and turned it into over 100 units of new housing that will benefit the neighborhood for years to come," said Governor Lamont. The development was funded through public and private investment, including $8 million from the Connecticut Department of Housing and support from the HTCC program.
The six-story complex is now almost fully leased, with only four apartments remaining, highlighting strong demand for affordable housing in the city. Mayor Stewart noted that the project will "significantly uplift the quality of life" for residents while reimagining a long-underutilized landmark.
The project generated over 600 jobs and contributed nearly $108 million to the regional economy. It also prioritized inclusive hiring, with more than half the jobs filled by women and people of color, and one in five roles going to low-income local residents.
Residents will enjoy amenities such as a fitness center, game room, community spaces, outdoor seating areas, and 230 parking spaces. The property is located just one mile from downtown New Britain and accessible via CTfastrak mass transit.
