ew Hampshire's housing market has been named one of the top 10 "housing hot spots" for 2025 by the National Association of Realtors. The Granite State is considered a top performer compared to other national markets, but finding a new place to live remains challenging. According to Joanie McIntire, president of the New Hampshire Realtors Association, buyers are having a hard time, especially first-time homebuyers competing for houses. "I would say it's still kind of dire," she said.
The difference in cost of living is driving buyers north from Massachusetts and other parts of the country. In 2023, 30% of homebuyers were from out of state, including regions like the West Coast and the South. This influx of people has contributed to a housing shortage, with rental availability statewide less than 1%. McIntire notes that New Hampshire is far more affordable compared to its southern neighbor.
Despite the challenges, McIntire emphasizes that there are many reasons why New Hampshire is a great place to live. The state offers easy access to various attractions, including the ocean, Boston, mountains, and lakes. To navigate the competitive market, NHAR recommends working with a realtor to find a home you love. If moving from out of state, they suggest considering renting before making a purchase.
