New townhome development proposed for Thompson and Grove intersection

Underutilized property redeveloped to meet city's need for new construction housing.

A
0.75-acre plot in Carytown, once eyed for a hotel, is now set to become a residential development. Cornerstone Homes and Doswell Ventures are planning a 17-unit townhome project at 100 N. Thompson St. and 3600 Floyd Ave. The site was previously owned by KM Hotels, which had filed plans for a 127-room Residence Inn in 2019 but ultimately abandoned the project.

Doswell Ventures purchased the land for over $3 million in 2020. Cornerstone and Doswell are now seeking to tear down the six existing office and residential buildings on the site and build townhomes, dubbed Carytown Heights. The development arm of Henrico-based real estate firm The Crescent Group, Cornerstone considered various options before settling on townhomes.

"We're pretty excited about it," said Crescent Group President Mike Lang. "We think it's a great location and we think there's a big need for new construction housing in the city." Each townhome would be approximately 3,200 square feet, with three stories and customizable features, including an optional fourth-floor attic and deck.

Crescent and Doswell are seeking a special-use permit to move forward with the project. Preliminary renderings show the townhomes' design. The development is separate from Crescent's other ongoing work in western Chesterfield, a 550-unit age-restricted subdivision near Magnolia Green.
