A
s the Democratic primary nears its end, attention is shifting from who donated to Andrew Cuomo's mayoral campaign to those who didn't. Fix the City, a super PAC backing Cuomo, has amassed nearly $25 million, with over $5.5 million coming from real estate executives and construction unions. Some industry heavyweights have directly contributed to Cuomo's campaign or Fix the City.
Notably, several prominent donors from previous Cuomo gubernatorial runs appear to be sitting out this mayoral election. Related Companies' Jeff Blau, Red Apple Group's John Catsimatidis, Island Capital Group's Andrew Farkas, and Moinian Group's Joseph Moinian were among those who gave tens of thousands of dollars to Cuomo in the past but haven't donated this time around.
This doesn't necessarily mean they're opposed to Cuomo. Some have contributed to other mayoral candidates or given through family members or company affiliates. For instance, Related's Stephen Ross donated $50,000 to Fix the City. Catsimatidis, meanwhile, has expressed support for Cuomo while also considering Mayor Eric Adams as a viable candidate.
Recent donors to Cuomo and Fix the City include SL Green Realty's Marc Holiday, Extell's Gary Barnett, and Rudin Management's entity. RXR's Scott Rechler gave $250,000 in March, while Arker Companies executives donated $125,000 through various LLCs. Those who identified themselves as real estate professionals donated over $500,000 directly to Cuomo's campaign.
Cuomo has vowed to run as an independent in the general election regardless of Tuesday's primary results. Many of his opponents have cross-endorsed each other and urged supporters against ranking Cuomo.
