T
he Northumberland County Commissioners have approved a $91 million budget for 2025, which includes a 5-mill real estate tax hike. This translates to an average annual increase of $50 to $150 for property owners. Despite concerns about increased taxes, Commissioner Chairman Sam Schiccatano emphasized that the county is financially stable and not facing financial difficulties.
Schiccatano noted that only one tax has been raised in the county, while many other municipalities are increasing their taxes at a higher rate. He pointed out that county taxes are generally lower compared to municipal taxes. The 5-mill increase will generate $3.5 million in revenue, which is crucial for covering salaries, health insurance, and prison costs.
As part of the budget, non-bargaining employees will receive a 2.5% salary increase starting in January. The county commissioners' next meetings are scheduled for January 2 and 7 at the county administration building.
