NYC penthouse with opulent gilded decor sells for $34M to a buyer who wants to preserve its luxury features

Central Park West unit boasts 5,398 sq ft with four bedrooms and a home office/screening room.

A
lavish penthouse on Central Park West has finally found a buyer, with Russian billionaire Valery Kogan and his wife Olga selling their gilded gem for $33.89 million. The sale includes the opulent furnishings, which are as extravagant as they are eye-catching.

The 5,398-square-foot top-floor unit at 15 Central Park West boasts an "extreme-Versailles" style, complete with 24-karat gold accents and a sprawling layout that's perfect for grand entertaining. Despite its luxurious vibe, the penthouse has had a tumultuous past, having faced foreclosure in the not-so-distant past.

The buyer, shrouded in anonymity behind a shell company, is reportedly eager to preserve the property's original charm, with whispers of Robert A.M. Stern's design firm being brought back on board for a "refresh." This comes as Kogan finds himself at odds with Putin over control of the Domodedovo airport.

The sale marks another significant real estate transaction in Kogan's massive sell-off following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The billionaire has been shedding assets, including his Greenwich, Conn., estate for $10.4 million and a penthouse in Israel for $33 million. His Plaza Hotel condo remains on the market, asking $23 million after a price cut from its original $50 million ask.

The Kogans' real estate portfolio is vast, with another home in Israel listed for a staggering $89 million – down dramatically from its initial $259 million ask. As the sale of 15 Central Park West comes to a close, it's clear that Valery and Olga Kogan are making significant changes to their global property holdings.
