Gramercy Park townhouse once owned by Oleg Cassini, Jackie O's favorite fashion designer and a notorious playboy linked to Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly, is back on the market with a $1 million price cut. The four-story, 20-foot-wide home at 135 E. 19th St. will ask $7.99 million.
The residence boasts historical touches, including stained glass on every floor, beamed ceilings, and decorative stone inlays. Listing broker Eleonora Srugo describes it as a "bad-ass Gothic party house" with something unique around every corner. The home was last purchased at auction for $5 million in 2022.
Built in the 1870s as the Joseph B. Thomas House, a Greek Revival home, it was later remodeled by English-born architect Frederick Junius Sterner into a "Gothic fantasy" with gargoyles and a carved coat of arms. The property features six bedrooms, 5.5 baths, a working fountain in the garden, and a chef's kitchen.
The house has an unusual origin story, claiming to have been built 400 years ago in Amsterdam and dismantled and shipped to New York, where it was reassembled in the 19th century. While some question this claim, Srugo notes that some of the home may have been shipped from Europe.
Oleg Cassini hosted glamorous parties inside, dressing his famous clients, including Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly. The late designer's philosophy was to enhance a woman's natural beauty without altering her anatomy. The townhouse is now ready for its next owner to restore it to its former glory.
