n Massachusetts, outdoor amenities were top priority for homebuyers in 2024, according to a Zillow analysis. The most searched terms included "pool," "yard," "garage," "lake," and "loft." One ambitious buyer even sought a property with both "ski" and "beach" access - a rare combination that might be found in Western or Central Massachusetts, but not by the ocean.
Nationally, homebuyers favored variety. Ranch-style homes were popular for their charm and convenience, while mid-century modern and modern homes also gained traction. The most searched-for home attributes included:
Ranch (ranch style)
Lake
Duplex (duplexes)
Cabin (cabins)
Farms
Acreage
Garage
Loft
Luxury
Furnished
"Pool" was a top search in 38 states, while "garage" made the list in 48. In Maine, "farms" topped the list, and buyers in every New England state prioritized garages.
Some homebuyers took their searches to extremes: one Colorado buyer sought a house with a roller coaster, while another in Michigan wanted laser tag. At least one shopper in 22 states searched for a "haunted" home - adding a spooky twist to the housing market.
