Pedals and Properties: Local Agents Embark on Cycling Adventure in Cambodia

Colleagues Johnny Phan and Joey Schihl collaborate on documentary film premiering at The Byrd Theater.

J
ohnny Phan's journey to reconnect with his Cambodian roots led him to join the Cambodian National Cycling Team and compete in international games. His friend Joey Schihl, a documentary filmmaker, saw an opportunity to capture this story on camera. Schihl teamed up with Ben Saunders and Kyle Jonas to co-direct and shoot "Chasing Cambodia," which follows Phan's journey as he pursues competitive cycling at the pro level.

As a first-generation Cambodian-American, Phan grew up in Richmond's suburbs after his parents fled the Khmer Rouge regime. He suppressed his heritage until planning to have children, when he felt compelled to reconnect with his roots. This led him and his wife Maddy on a 30-hour trip to Cambodia, where they met a cycling friend who encouraged Phan to join the national team.

Phan's experience was documented over several months, capturing his training in Richmond and competition in the Cambodian National Cycling Championship. The film also explores Phan's cultural awakening as he navigated his heritage and identity. Despite initial reservations about being on camera, Phan is pleased with the final product.

"Chasing Cambodia" has been shown at film festivals in Southeast Asia and the US, and will have its Richmond premiere at The Byrd Theater on Saturday afternoon. PBS and American Public Television plan to broadcast the documentary later this year, and it will be available to stream on PBS's app soon after.
