ick Matthews, a veteran publicist and co-head of Rubenstein's real estate team, has passed away at 71. Barbara Wagner, a former executive vice president at the firm, confirmed the news to Commercial Observer. "Rick was an encouraging and kind person who gave everyone their due," she said. "He ran a very collaborative team."
Matthews was a managing director at Rubenstein, which was named one of the most powerful PR firms in the US by Observer in 2023. He helped oversee the firm's real estate industry practice, serving clients like Vornado Realty Trust and Tishman Speyer. Matthews began his career at Prudential Insurance for 23 years before joining Rubenstein in 1998 as senior vice president.
After a stint at Trizec Properties, he returned to Rubenstein in 2005 and took on the role of managing director in 2016, retiring in 2022. "Rick was deeply devoted to his family," said Steven Rubenstein, president at Rubenstein. "He brought his wisdom to bear for his clients every day." Matthews was also an active member of the National Association of Real Estate Editors (NAREE) and a dedicated volunteer.
Matthews is survived by his wife Susan, children Evan, Emma, and Anna, brother Robert, sister Cynthia, and two grandchildren. Funeral services will take place on Friday.
