ccording to Realtor.com's analysis, a family of four in Rhode Island needs an annual median income of $151,067 to afford a median-priced three-bedroom home. This figure is based on a 30-year fixed mortgage rate of 6.65%, property taxes, and insurance, with a 10% down payment.

    The analysis found that nearly half of states have median household incomes too low for the typical four-person family to afford a median-priced three-bedroom home. Hawaii is the least affordable place to buy a home, where the recommended income is $229,341, but the actual median income for a family of four is only $133,656.

    Realtor.com ranked the top 10 most and least affordable states in the country based on this analysis. Rhode Island did not make either list, placing it somewhere in the middle for affordability. However, it's one of 35 states where families need to earn six figures to buy a home.
