Rosemont suburb considers sale of iconic theatre to new entertainment operator

Rosemont Theatre, a 30-year-old landmark, may be sold to a private entertainment company after initial zoning changes.

T
he Rosemont Theatre, a 30-year-old landmark in the village, may be sold to a private entertainment firm. Village officials have taken initial steps towards a potential sale by rezoning the property from government and institutional to commercial. The theatre has faced challenges competing with larger venues in downtown Chicago, despite receiving federal grants during the pandemic.

Village officials have discussed selling the theatre for several years and are currently in talks with a private entertainment firm. While the sale is not yet finalized, the village is weighing the offer's potential impact on the community and surrounding commercial development. If the sale moves forward, the buyer would take over the building and ongoing show agreements.

The village has explored various options for the theatre's future, including a tentative agreement with Macerich to demolish it and expand the Fashion Outlets of Chicago mall. However, those plans were derailed by the pandemic. The village is also considering redevelopment projects in Rosemont, such as the demolition of an eight-story city-owned office building at 9501 West Devon Avenue.

The village board approved a $1.3 million demolition contract for the former Rosemont village hall building and its adjacent parking structure. The site has significant redevelopment potential, envisioned as a possible location for office spaces, entertainment venues, or upscale restaurants.
