Russian Real Estate Database Allegedly Hacked, Authorities Dispute Incident

Hacker Group Silent Crow Claims Data Breach of Russia's Cadastre Agency.

A
Russian hacker group called Silent Crow has claimed to have breached Russia's state cadastre and cartography agency, obtaining sensitive data. According to independent outlet Agentstvo, the stolen database contains personal information such as owners' names, dates of birth, addresses, passport details, and phone numbers until early 2024.

The hackers claim to have obtained 2 billion lines of data, publishing 82 million as proof. However, Russia's state register has denied the breach, stating that they are conducting additional checks on the information published online.

Agentstvo randomly verified 15 recordings from the leaked database, finding them to match real owners. The group behind Silent Crow remains unknown, and their claims have not been independently verified by The Kyiv Independent.

The leak highlights concerns about data protection in Russia, particularly after a law was passed in 2023 banning the publication of personal information without consent. This move has made it harder for investigative journalists to expose corruption using public records.

Russia and Ukraine have both used cyberattacks to target government institutions during the ongoing conflict. In December, a Russian-backed attack targeted several state registers overseen by Ukraine's Justice Ministry.
