n a passionate address to the Basque Country, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez fired back at US President Donald Trump's audacious plan to transform Gaza into a luxury resort. "The notion that a real estate scheme can erase the atrocities committed in Gaza is nothing short of obscene," he declared. "We will not stand idly by as the world's most vulnerable are pushed aside for the sake of profit."
Sanchez reiterated his commitment to a two-state solution, where Palestinians and Israelis can coexist in peace and harmony. He lambasted Trump's proposal to relocate Gaza's population to neighboring countries, calling it a "recipe for disaster." The Spanish leader also took aim at US Vice President JD Vance's recent comments on European tolerance for far-right parties.
"Vance's words are a Trojan horse," Sanchez warned. "The international far-right seeks to dismantle Europe from within, and we must not let them succeed." He urged Spain's conservative Popular Party to break its ties with the far-right party Vox, accusing them of being complicit in Trump's agenda while turning a blind eye to US tariffs on European goods.
Sanchez painted a stark picture of the far-right as a "multinational" force driven by neoliberalism and a disregard for human rights. He vowed to fight against this tide, saying that accepting it would be to normalize its destructive tendencies. With trade wars looming, Sanchez reaffirmed his opposition to protectionism and pledged to defend Spanish workers' interests.
As the world grapples with global challenges, Sanchez emphasized Spain's commitment to multilateralism and international law. He made clear that any future for Ukraine must be shaped by Ukrainian leadership, and that European security should be negotiated among Europeans themselves. As president of Socialist International, Sanchez is a leading voice in promoting democratic socialism worldwide.
