oward Lutnick, owner of Cantor Fitzgerald and commercial brokerage Newmark, is reportedly clashing with Donald Trump over his role in the president-elect's transition team. According to the New York Times, Trump is growing frustrated with Lutnick's constant presence and concerns that he may be manipulating the process for personal gain. Despite their long-standing relationship, which includes a Hamptons fundraiser and appearances on "The Apprentice," Trump is now considering other candidates for Treasury secretary, including Apollo Global Management CEO Marc Rowan.
Lutnick had been considered a top contender for the position but has fallen out of favor with Trump. The two met on Sunday, but details of their discussion remain private. Lutnick's relationship with Key Square Capital Management founder Scott Bessent is also strained, and Elon Musk has publicly backed Lutnick over Bessent as a candidate for Treasury secretary. Trump is expected to meet this week with Rowan and former Federal Reserve governor Kevin Warsh, whom he has praised as "smart and handsome."
