resident-elect Donald Trump's appointment of Steve Witkoff, a longtime friend and golfing partner, as special envoy to the Middle East has raised eyebrows. Witkoff, a billionaire real estate executive from New York City, lacks diplomatic experience and is not an authority on Middle Eastern geopolitics. His past financial dealings with Qatar have also sparked concerns about conflicts of interest.
Despite these reservations, Witkoff's acquaintances in the real estate industry and Jewish Republicans involved in Middle East issues express confidence in his ability to succeed in this high-profile role. David Friedman, Trump's former ambassador to Israel, describes Witkoff as a "brilliant businessman" with a deep understanding of Israel and its strategic importance.
Witkoff has built relationships in the region through his real estate firm, which owns properties across the country and in London. He has also raised money for pro-Israel causes and spoken at events in Qatar, where he expressed optimism about investment opportunities due to what he called "solid government." However, experts question whether Witkoff's past dealings with Qatar could create conflicts of interest.
Witkoff sold Manhattan's Park Lane Hotel to the Qatar Investment Authority in 2023 for $623 million. This deal came after Qatar launched a lobbying effort during Trump's first term, which included meeting with American executives like Witkoff. Nick Muzin, who led the Qatari lobbying operation, described Witkoff as "politically savvy" and "good at finding a way to make a deal."
Ben Baird, director of advocacy for the Middle East Forum, expressed concerns that Witkoff had been targeted by Qatar as part of an ongoing "charm offensive." However, he acknowledged that Witkoff's appointment could still benefit American interests. Bob Knakal, a veteran real estate broker in New York City, also expressed confidence in Witkoff's ability to succeed in his new role.
Witkoff has previously served as an informal advisor to Trump on various issues and took an active role in the campaign, helping to link Trump with Jewish donors who had become angered over President Joe Biden's approach to Israel. As he prepares to assume his new position, Witkoff is reportedly reaching out to countries in the region and seeking input from Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law.
