A
former East Village synagogue has been transformed into a luxurious four-bedroom rental home. The 4,217-square-foot property at 317 E. 8th St. is now on the market for $27,500 per month.
Built in the late 19th century, the Gothic Revival synagogue was once a hub of Jewish life in the East Village. However, after suffering significant damage in a fire in 1982, it fell victim to real estate interests and was converted into residential housing in 2000.
The current owner, Martin Davis, purchased the property in 2004 for $1.31 million and undertook a meticulous renovation by designer Tim Andreas. The interior was gutted while preserving the exterior's original features, including stained glass and the iconic Star of David.
Today, the four-story home boasts an array of luxurious amenities, such as Brazilian hardwood cherry floors, radiant floor heating, and custom windows with the original 19th-century Star of David design. Other highlights include a landscaped roof deck with a hot tub, steam room, and wine storage; a chef's kitchen with a large island; and a cantilevered balcony with a built-in projector.
The property features four bedrooms, including one on the main floor with access to a dining terrace, and two more on the second level with custom closets. The third floor is dedicated to the master bedroom, complete with an ensuite bath and access to a hot tub-equipped terrace. The fourth floor houses a penthouse office with ipe wood floors and custom sound.
