T
he New York Blood Center's $750 million expansion project, known as Center East, has been stalled for nearly four years despite securing a contentious rezoning in 2021. The project aims to boost the life sciences industry and create jobs, but its progress has been hindered by inflation and capital market uncertainty.
Construction permits have yet to be filed for the commercial property at 310 East 67th Street, where the Center East facility is planned. Local Councilmember Ben Kallos had opposed the rezoning, citing concerns about shadows over St. Catherine's Park. However, the project received City Council approval in 2021 and was touted as a way to expand the life sciences industry and create jobs.
The original start date of 2022 has been missed, and the completion date of 2026 is unlikely to be met. A spokesperson for the Blood Center stated that their ultimate plans for Center East have not changed, but there are rumors of changes in project partnerships. Longfellow Real Estate Partners, the company spearheading the project, did not respond to requests for comment on whether they remain involved.
