Virginia Tech Partners with Real Estate Firm to Revolutionize Drone Technology

CoStar Group Inc. meets FAA drone safety standards, enabling uncrewed aerial operations over people.

A
leading real estate information and services company, CoStar Group Inc., has gained approval to use drones for capturing high-quality images of properties. This was made possible by Virginia Tech's drone experts, who developed a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-approved means of compliance for drone operations over people.

CoStar can now utilize uncrewed aerial systems (UAS) to capture detailed imagery, which is essential for its work in providing accurate information and services to clients. According to Mason Adams, CoStar's senior director of architectural photography, "Drones are a powerful tool in our arsenal, allowing us to gather critical information safely and accurately."

CoStar worked with Virginia Tech researchers to ensure that its systems could fly over areas with people without compromising safety. This collaboration will enable the company to provide more detailed imagery for its clients, who rely on accurate information for commercial and residential property markets.

This project is another example of Virginia Tech's expertise in applying advanced technologies to real-world problems. "Our work with CoStar Group highlights the positive impact of drones when used safely," said MAAP Director Tombo Jones. "We're contributing to the safe integration of drones into national airspace, which aligns with our mission."

Virginia Tech has been at the forefront of drone research and development, having worked with Sinclair Broadcast Group earlier this year to become the first media group approved for drone operations over people. The university is also part of a $5 million award from the U.S. Army to establish its Counter UAS Research and Testing Center.

The FAA's Operations over People rule, established in 2021, allows for drone operations over people but requires testing to ensure compliance with safety standards. Virginia Tech developed a means of compliance that was accepted by the FAA, paving the way for industry partners like CoStar to use drones safely and effectively.
