Woman convicted of murder gets 20-year prison term for agent's fatal shooting

Elsa Segura Sentenced to 20 Years for Role in 2019 Killing of Minneapolis Real Estate Agent Monique Baugh.

A
former Hennepin County probation officer has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for her role in the 2019 murder of Minneapolis real estate agent Monique Baugh. Baugh, a 28-year-old mother and agent, was found fatally shot in an alley on December 31, 2019. Elsa Segura, 32, pleaded guilty to one count of kidnapping after admitting she used a fake name and burner phone to set up a house showing with Baugh, where two accomplices kidnapped and shot her.

Segura's case had previously been sent back to district court by the Minnesota Supreme Court, which overturned her original life sentence without parole due to lack of evidence that she knew what her co-defendants would do. However, Segura's guilty plea and sentencing bring closure to a nearly five-year ordeal for Baugh's family.

Monique's mother Wanda Baugh expressed disappointment in the new sentence, stating it was not as harsh as the original life sentence without parole. "Today is not a good day for me and my family," she said. "We were content knowing that she would spend the rest of her life in prison, as she should."

Prosecutors believe Lyndon Wiggins, Segura's former boyfriend, orchestrated the killing due to a dispute with Baugh's boyfriend. Two other defendants are serving life sentences without parole for their involvement, while another defendant was sentenced to parole for aiding an offender.

Judge Mark Kappelhoff agreed to the 20-year sentence, citing the "particular cruelty" of the crime and the involvement of multiple defendants. The sentence is longer than typical guidelines for kidnapping. Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty stated that her office struck a plea deal with Segura's attorneys to avoid prolonging the case further.
