    The collapse of the steel industry in the late 1970s and early 1980s led to widespread job losses and a mass exodus of locals, resulting in a near-economic collapse. However, Pittsburgh has since experienced a resurgence, regularly topping lists of the most livable places in the US. The city's affordability is a major draw, with homes selling for nearly half the national median price.

    Local realtor Sara Leitera notes that Pittsburgh's market is stable due to its strong education and medical institutions, as well as growing technology companies. The city offers a unique blend of affordable homes, top-notch schools, and a vibrant food scene. With 446 bridges, the most in any city worldwide, Pittsburgh boasts a rich history and culture.

    The city's sports teams, including the six-time Super Bowl champions Pittsburgh Steelers, are also a major draw. Budget-conscious buyers have been flocking to the city due to expensive housing markets across the US. The local housing market saw a 47% spike in new home listings in 2024, with houses selling in around 12 days.

    Pittsburgh's affordability has earned it the title of America's best place to buy an affordable home. Residents spend just 14.8% of their income on home-related expenses, the second-lowest percentage across all cities studied. The city's springtime sales boom is also a notable trend, with March, April, May, and June being the busiest months for property sales.

    The average asking price in Pittsburgh has risen to $342,112, up from $317,541 last year. Investors are taking notice of the city's potential for real estate profits, with a new $740 million housing complex approved by the Pittsburgh City Planning Commission. The project will transform post-industrial wasteland into an inclusive riverfront community.

    Despite its growing popularity, Pittsburgh remains known for its affordability, with fixer-uppers available for under $100K in up-and-coming areas like Sheraden. The rental market is also on fire, with over 60 colleges and a burgeoning tech scene driving demand. The city's landlord-friendly policies have made it an attractive destination for out-of-state buyers, particularly New Yorkers.
