APCOA Deutschland is introducing a new parking system at the schauinsland-reisen-arena in cooperation with Duisburg stadium management (DSM). The implementation will take place for MSV Duisburg's first home game of the new 2026/2027 third-division season on 8 August. The measure aims to digitalise and simplify processes for major events, starting with visitors' arrival.
The new system automatically registers vehicles in parking areas P1 to P4 using licence plate recognition. This will apply to major events at the arena in the future. For MSV Duisburg home games, parking areas P2 and P3 will remain exclusively reserved for holders of special MSV Duisburg parking permits. APCOA manages a total of approximately 2,300 parking spaces in these areas.
Licence plate-based payment and traffic flow optimisation
Ten installed cameras record the licence plates of vehicles entering and exiting, eliminating the need for a physical parking ticket. The parking fee is six EUR per game and must be paid entirely cashless. Visitors can pay via the ScanPay function on their smartphone up to 24 hours after the event, or at one of the five pay stations on the premises at any time during their event visit. The system automatically checks upon exit whether the parking process has been settled. Improved signage around the arena will be updated over the course of the year.
Christopher Mainka, Managing Director of Duisburg stadium management, explained that previous traffic observations had shown how the cash payment process at entry regularly led to tailbacks on surrounding roads. The new system addresses this by eliminating this bottleneck through automated processing and noticeably improving traffic flow. He emphasised that the number of available parking spaces remains limited and the system primarily serves process optimisation, not the creation of new capacities.
Katrin Teichert, Managing Director of APCOA Deutschland, highlighted that a smooth parking process is essential for the visitor experience. The combination of automatic licence plate recognition and cashless payment eases the burden on fans and speeds up access to the arena. The system will be used at all further major events in the schauinsland-reisen-arena from 8 August 2026. APCOA is already responsible for parking management at other stadium locations in Germany.
