The Hanover-based architectural practice Woelk Wilkens will henceforth be part of the formicon Group. This merger is strategically significant as it expands formicon's expertise in two specific and growing market segments: security-relevant and defence-related construction, and the field of monument conservation, refurbishment, and repurposing.
The integration of Woelk Wilkens is primarily based on its proven competence in demanding construction projects for institutions such as the German Federal Armed Forces (Bundeswehr), air traffic control, and the police. These projects place high demands on planning, processes, technical infrastructure, and security, requiring specific expert knowledge and many years of experience. Ulf Bambach, CEO of formicon, emphasised that acquiring expertise with Woelk Wilkens that cannot be built up in the short term represents considerable potential. The now combined competencies enable the integrated planning and implementation of complex security-relevant construction tasks from a single source.
Expansion of Expertise
In addition to its core competence in security-relevant construction, Woelk Wilkens brings extensive experience in monument conservation, refurbishment, and the repurposing of existing buildings to the formicon Group. This area is not only relevant from a building culture perspective but also economically and ecologically significant, as it promotes the preservation of raw materials and the use of already embedded grey energy. Over the past three decades, Woelk Wilkens has established itself across the breadth of monument conservation, from medieval structures to post-war modernism.
- —Heritage-compliant refurbishment of Hanover's Stadthalle by Paul Bonatz.
- —Restoration of the Orangerie and the pavilions in the Herrenhausen Gardens.
- —Repurposing of monastery complexes.
Carola Woelk, Managing Director and founder of the architectural practice, underscores her company's approach of viewing every task with respect for the respective context, functional complexity, and future users. Matthias Wilkens, also a founder, sees the integration now completed as a forward-looking development. The merger with specialist engineers from all disciplines within formicon enables a close connection, which is essential for the realisation of security infrastructure and monument conservation projects.
Strategic Development of formicon
The integration of Woelk Wilkens is a logical step in formicon's growth strategy, which aims to continuously expand its range of services. Already nine architectural practices and engineering companies are part of the group. With Woelk Wilkens, another experienced team complements the group, allowing formicon to grow not only in size but also in the breadth and depth of available competencies. This enables formicon to continue offering integrated solutions in architecture, engineering, project management, cost and schedule planning, and site supervision.
