European hostel chain a&o has appointed Gernot Porcher as Senior Vice President of Construction. In this role, the 56-year-old architect and real estate economist will oversee the planning, construction delivery and long-term value preservation of all properties across the group. Porcher currently heads a team of ten, with staffing set to expand in the near future.
Prior to joining a&o, the Hesse-born executive held leadership roles in the property sector. Until 2015, he headed the project and risk management division at Ernst & Young. He subsequently moved to Deutsche Hospitality, the former Steigenberger Group and now H World International, where he most recently served as Vice President of Real Estate. In Porcher's view, the long-term success of hotel properties requires adaptable structures, cost discipline and durability beyond mere completion.
Structured expansion across European metropolises
Oliver Winter, founder and Chief Executive Officer of a&o, views the appointment as a clear signal for the upcoming growth trajectory. By the end of 2028, the Berlin-based company plans to open six new locations across Europe, four of them during the course of 2027. Over the past two years, the chain has already secured properties in Manchester, London, Milan, Florence and Brussels through acquisition and subsequent conversion, increasing capacity by approximately 11,500 beds.

Institutional framework and portfolio expansion
Founded in 2000, the company currently operates 46 properties with around 31,600 beds across 32 European cities. For the 2025 financial year, the group reported almost three million guests and approximately 6.6 million overnight stays. The offering traditionally caters to families, young travellers and school groups. According to company management, the market offers viable potential to double the portfolio over the medium term.
The segment's evolution into an institutional asset class is also reflected in the financing structure. The company recently completed an 874 million EUR refinancing with financial investor Apollo. Since the end of 2023, a&o has been owned by investment firms Stepstone Group and Proprium Capital Partners, a setup that secures the foundation for upcoming construction and conversion projects.
