Peter Gross Bau has commenced construction work in Montabaur for the 'Wohnen im Kirchgarten' residential project on the approximately 8,000 square metre site of the former Luther Church. The venture envisages the construction of 88 subsidised residential units. The projected completion of the overall project is scheduled for 2027. The official groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of the construction phase, which is expected to lead to the realisation of modern housing in the coming months.
Representatives from the city administration and project participants attended the celebratory inaugural event. Among those present were Mayoress Melanie Leicher and Mayor Dr. Ulrich Richter-Hopprich of the Verbandsgemeinde. Andreas Janzen, Dmitri Janzen and Paul Frank, Managing Directors of Peter Gross Hochbau GmbH & Co. KG, were in attendance. Other key figures included Christian Plate and Jana Benner from Sparkasse Westerwald-Sieg, Tobias Böker from Böker & Paul AG, as well as further investors and project partners.
Project structure and construction progress
The undertaking comprises the construction of a total of eight buildings, each housing eleven residential units. All 88 planned apartments will be realised in accordance with the funding guidelines of Investitions- und Strukturbank Rheinland-Pfalz (ISB). The project, originally conceived as a single venture, underwent a fundamental strategic reorientation in 2025. The concept was modified to allow for the participation of multiple investors. In February 2025, Peter Gross Bau was entrusted with the structural implementation of the project.
The initial construction phases include earthworks and foundation work, which form the basis for the subsequent shell construction. Peter Gross Bau is responsible for coordinating all trades during this phase and bears responsibility for adhering to quality standards, deadlines, and cost-effective execution. Dmitri Janzen, Head of the Koblenz Building Construction branch, emphasised that the groundbreaking makes a long-prepared development process visible and that the project's success is based on the close collaboration of all parties involved.
Location and societal relevance
The project's location on Martin-Luther-Straße, on the former site of the Protestant Luther Church, is of particular significance. The church congregation decided to sell the site due to substantial renovation requirements and changed structural needs. 'Wohnen im Kirchgarten' will create a new residential quarter designed to integrate into the existing surroundings and contribute to the structural development of the location. The overall concept provides for various forms of housing, which will help to supply urgently needed accommodation in Montabaur.
