IKEA is implementing a novel store concept in Germany, starting with a location in Ingolstadt, scheduled to open on 25 June 2026. This new format differs significantly from IKEA's established, large-scale home furnishing stores. With a total area of approximately 2,950 square metres, this location presents itself as a compact home furnishing store in a central, urban setting. This contrasts with the average 35,000 square metres typically found in classic IKEA stores. The concept aims to enhance customer proximity and facilitate a convenient shopping experience through shorter distances and good public transport links.
Peter Jelkeby, CEO and CSO of IKEA Germany, commented on the opening as a significant step to bring IKEA closer to customers. He emphasised that the continuous review and development of store formats aim to create a more personalised and accessible shopping experience. The integration of these smaller home furnishing stores into IKEA's omnichannel strategy serves to address diverse customer needs more efficiently. The presence in Ingolstadt is intended to enable people in the region to easily access inspiration, professional planning support, and selected products.
Concept features and product range
In contrast to traditional IKEA home furnishing stores, which offer around 10,000 products for immediate takeaway, the new format in Ingolstadt provides a specifically focused shopping experience. The range includes approximately 3,690 products, such as home accessories, smaller furniture items, and kitchen and household goods. Of these, around 2,690 items are available directly on site. Customers have the option to digitally order the full IKEA range in-store and choose between home delivery or later collection. IKEA’s well-known delivery and assembly services, as well as existing online channels, will remain in place. A future addition of Click & Collect is planned. Furthermore, a selection of IKEA Food products, including hot dogs and meatballs, will be offered for immediate consumption.
The introduction of this new concept is a response to changing consumer habits and aims to integrate the shopping experience more into customers' daily lives. It represents an integral part of the company's omnichannel strategy and complements existing classic home furnishing stores, planning studios, and digital sales channels. IKEA views the Ingolstadt model as a learning concept, with its further development largely influenced by customer feedback. This marks the first step in Germany for this format.
Strategic expansion and regional significance
The new format in Ingolstadt is exemplary of IKEA's strategic further development in Germany. It is consciously being launched as a pilot project to demonstrate how quality and stylish furnishing solutions can be made accessible to a broader audience. Through the new location, IKEA strengthens its presence in the region and establishes a place that promotes an uncomplicated and everyday customer experience. Following successful pilot implementations in the United Kingdom, Poland, the USA, and France, IKEA is now extending this home furnishing concept to further markets. In addition to Ingolstadt, openings are planned for the coming three months in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Finland, and Canada, among other locations.
