Ina Scharrenbach, Minister for Homeland, Municipal Affairs, Building and Digitalisation of North Rhine-Westphalia, visited the newly developed residential quarter “Gold:Eck” in Düsseldorf-Niederkassel. This visit took place as part of the “WohneNRW-Tage 2026” (Living in NRW Days 2026), an initiative that focuses on publicly subsidised housing. The Minister held discussions with residents of the quarter and received detailed insights into the overall concept from the project developers. A striking feature of the project is the integration of housing for apprentices in shared flats, complemented by a 45 per cent subsidy for affordable housing.

Together with Düsseldorf’s Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller and representatives of the housing industry and tenant associations, Minister Scharrenbach highlighted that the creation of affordable housing for all social strata is a primary goal of public housing subsidies. She emphasised that the mix of privately financed and publicly subsidised units in “Gold:Eck” leads to a significant enhancement and a new appearance for the entire quarter. In this context, living was defined as an element of quality of life that goes beyond the mere provision of space.

“Gold:Eck” was completed at the end of 2025 and comprises a gross floor area of approximately 11,800 square metres. The development of the project, which includes 102 residential units, resulted from an urban development investor selection process, in which Landmarken AG was successful. The design submitted jointly with konrath und wennemar architekten und ingenieure won the competition, prevailing against more than 30 other entries. The ensemble consists of four buildings with a height of four to eight above-ground storeys, which blend harmoniously into the urban environment.

The design of the outdoor area, overseen by RMP Stephan Lentzen Landschaftsarchitekten, created extensive green spaces. A spacious roof terrace, accessible to all residents, complements the communal open areas. The entire project was realised by Eckehard Adams Wohnungsbau GmbH, which also managed the sale of the privately financed owner-occupied flats. A share of 45 per cent of the living space in “Gold:Eck” is price-bound. These subsidised and price-dampened rental flats are managed by Stadtmarken GmbH, a sister company of Landmarken AG.

The four apprentice flats, designed as shared living arrangements, represent a special feature of the project. Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller praised the quarter as social, business-friendly, and future-oriented, as it opens up prospects for young people and binds them to the city in the long term. One of these flats was rented by Caritasverband Düsseldorf. Ansgar Funcke, Chairman of the Board of Caritasverband Düsseldorf, emphasised the relevance of an affordable and secure home for apprentices to enable them a good professional and personal start. The cooperation with Stadtmarken allows the association to offer attractive housing in a central location. Another element of the usage mix within the quarter is a gastronomic offering, which will open soon.
