T
he housing market has become increasingly expensive, with the median home price in the US now standing at $425,000, a significant jump from the pre-pandemic average of $280,000. Mortgage rates have also risen above 6%, making it harder for buyers to find good deals. However, there are still some affordable options available.
According to Realtor.com's recent report, the top five US cities with median home prices below $300,000 are mostly located in the Northeast and Midwest. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania takes the top spot with a median list price of $245,000, followed closely by Detroit, Michigan at $277,000.
These cities have seen a decline in job growth and population over the past few decades, which has put downward pressure on housing prices. As a result, buyers can find more affordable options in these areas. Pittsburgh, for example, is one of the country's largest metro areas, but its market has shifted from being seller-friendly to neutral, with inventory piling up and homes selling slower than before.
Detroit, another Rust Belt city, offers potential homebuyers with flexibility a high quality of life at an affordable price. With remote work becoming more common, buyers can enjoy the benefits of living in Detroit while still earning a salary from elsewhere in the country.
