Argentine authorities retrieve stolen artwork from Nazi heiress's property listing

Daughter's attorney surrenders painting after property search yields nothing.

A
rgentine police have finally recovered a painting looted by the Nazis from a Dutch Jewish art dealer during World War II. The "Portrait of a Lady" by Giuseppe Ghislandi was spotted in an ad for a property sale, which led authorities to the home of Friedrich Kadgien's daughter, Patricia. However, when police arrived, the painting had been removed from the wall.

After placing Patricia on house arrest, police searched for the painting and eventually recovered it with the help of her family's lawyer. The painting is in good condition considering its age, dating back to 1710, and could be worth around $50,000.

During their search, authorities discovered other paintings that may have been looted during the Holocaust. Friedrich Kadgien was involved in funding Nazi operations by stealing Jewish property, including forcing owners to sell at depressed prices. The forced sale of Goudstikker's collection occurred after his death while fleeing the Netherlands, with hundreds of works recovered decades ago but many more remaining missing.

The recovery of "Portrait of a Lady" is a significant step towards reclaiming stolen art from the Holocaust era.
