Argentine Real Estate Listing Reveals Looted Nazi Painting

Stolen 18th-century painting recovered after being seen in real estate ad.

A
n 18th-century painting, "Portrait of a Lady (Contessa Colleoni)," has been recovered after it was spotted in an Argentinian real estate listing. The artwork was stolen over 80 years ago by Nazis from Dutch Jewish art dealer Jacques Goudstikker's collection.

The painting, valued at around $50,000, is in good condition considering its age of 1710. Authorities raided the home listed in the ad and found no evidence of the artwork, but a lawyer for Patricia Kadgien, daughter of Nazi financier Friedrich Kadgien, turned it over after the raid.

Kadgien and her husband are under house arrest and face charges of concealment of theft in the context of genocide at an upcoming hearing. They claim to have inherited the painting, but art expert Ariel Bassano notes that its value lies in its historical significance as part of Goudstikker's collection.

The recovery is a significant step towards restoring Goudstikker's legacy, which was robbed of over 1,000 artworks by Nazis. His daughter-in-law, Marei Von Saher, has been working to reclaim the stolen pieces since 2006 and currently possesses 202 items from the collection.
