Baby Boomers Own Nearly Half of U.S. Real Estate

Baby boomers own 41% of U.S. real estate, double millennials' share, as decades of price growth and harder entry for youth.

aby boomers hold roughly 41% of U.S. real‑estate, nearly twice the share of millennials, a pattern driven by decades of price gains and a tighter supply that has made buying harder for younger buyers. Though they represent under 20% of the population, boomers control about $20 trillion in property and 51.7% of national wealth. Gen X owns about 29.4% of real‑estate, while millennials own just over 20%. Property accounts for 22.7% of boomers’ net worth versus 40.8% for millennials. Millennials contribute 10% of U.S. wealth, compared with Gen X’s 25%. Analysts attribute the disparity to sustained appreciation, investment returns, and limited inventory.
