Bay Area Retailers Announce Store Closures in Multiple Locations

Three retailers to close nearly 20 underperforming stores in nine Bay Area cities.

W
algreens, Macy's, and Kohl's are closing underperforming stores across the Bay Area. Walgreens will shut down 12 locations in San Francisco by February, citing rising costs from regulatory pressures and reimbursement issues. The closures include high-theft stores and a site where a security guard fatally shot a suspected shoplifter in 2023. While some areas have crime concerns, the company insists that's not the primary reason for the closures.

The affected Walgreens locations are at Taraval Street, Divisadero Street, Market Street, Noriega Street, Geary Boulevard, Polk Street, Franklin Street, Potrero Avenue, Powell Street, Ocean Avenue, and Third Street. The company is also closing 1,200 stores nationwide due to challenges in managing rent, staffing, and supply expenses.

Macy's will close two department stores in Corte Madera and Newark as part of a broader plan to eliminate 66 locations nationwide. The closures are part of the company's strategy to adapt to consumer shifts towards smaller formats and e-commerce. Kohl's is also scaling back operations, closing five underperforming Bay Area stores by April as part of its plan to shut down 27 stores nationwide.

The Macy's stores set to close include locations at the Village at Corte Madera and NewPark Mall in Newark. The company plans to sell its 700,000-square-foot flagship store in San Francisco's Union Square eventually. Kohl's will close stores in Fremont, Mountain View, Napa, Pleasanton, and San Rafael as part of its strategy to focus on more profitable locations.
