Big Ass Fans founder sells historic NYC townhouse once owned by Malcolm Forbes

New owners to inherit 11 W. 12th St. property with exceptional interior design.

A
West Village townhouse once owned by Malcolm Forbes has been sold. The six-story, 25-foot-wide dwelling at 11 W. 12th St. was last asking $27 million before entering contract. The sale price is not yet disclosed.

The property's current owner, Texas-based entrepreneur J. Carey Smith, purchased the home in 2019 for $19.9 million. Smith made headlines in 2017 when he sold his company, Big Ass Fans, for $500 million and went on to found Unorthodox Ventures, an investment firm based in Austin.

The townhouse, built in 1847, boasts a charming red brick exterior and features massive exposures throughout its 9,652 square feet. The interior design is equally impressive, with five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and a two-car garage. Notable details include an elevator, an 800-bottle wine room, a movie theater, a gym, and a great room with ceilings over 22 feet high.

The property also offers 2,423 square feet of outdoor space, including a private garden, two terraces, and a rooftop hangout area perfect for summer dining. The listing brokers are Douglas Elliman's Mark Fromm and Claudia Saez-Fromm.
