n Southern Indiana, a unique opportunity awaits for those who've ever fantasized about being the ruler of their own castle. Birdsell Castle, an 8-acre property located at 6900 Dave Carr Road in Charlestown, is now on the market. This extraordinary estate features a large cinderblock structure that could have been plucked straight from a fairytale.
David Birdsell purchased the castle in summer 2021 for $400,000 after spotting it online and refusing to back down despite being offered $75,000 by another interested buyer. Originally, the property served as a water reservoir for an Army ammunition plant before Mackey Griffin transformed it into a castle in the 1990s.
Birdsell has since used the castle as a venue for Renaissance Fairs, weddings, and other themed events, which has taken precedence over his initial plan to renovate rooms for rental. The property boasts eight bedrooms, eight bathrooms, and 20,000 square feet of living space, including a 12-car garage and a courtyard within its 20-foot-tall castle walls.
Birdsell is selling the property due to maintenance demands and his advancing age. He's open to negotiations on the sale price, which has been reduced from $1.3 million to $995,000 since listing in May. The buyer will need to be someone who can appreciate the unique character of Birdsell Castle, complete with a traditional kitchen, living room, blacksmith shop, vampire crypt, and apothecary.
