Boone County senior real estate tax freeze initiative examined

Boone County voters to decide in August on expanding real estate tax freeze for seniors to include public bond debt.

A
flood advisory is in effect until 8:45 AM CDT this morning for central Missouri, including Boone, Callaway, Cole, and Moniteau counties. Heavy rain from thunderstorms has caused urban and small stream flooding, with an additional 1-2 inches of rain expected to exacerbate the situation.

Minor flooding is anticipated in low-lying areas and those prone to poor drainage. Affected locations include Columbia, Jefferson City, California, Ashland, and several other communities. Residents are advised to turn around when encountering flooded roads, as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.

Meanwhile, an extreme heat warning remains in effect until 7 PM CDT Thursday for southwest Illinois and central, east-central, and southeast Missouri. Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit pose a significant risk of heat-related illnesses.

To mitigate the effects of the heat, residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces, and avoid direct sunlight. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles, and outdoor workers should take regular breaks in shaded or cooled environments.

In the Saint Louis Metropolitan Area, individuals can seek information on cooling centers or energy assistance by calling 2-1-1 or the United Way of Greater Saint Louis at 800-427-4626.
