Burlington takes over Macy's lease in Melville, Long Island

Burlington to open at Melville Mall in Huntington Station, taking advantage of retail struggles.

B
urlington has secured a 32,000-square-foot lease at Melville Mall in Huntington Station, taking over the space previously occupied by Macy's Backstage. This move is part of Burlington's trend of acquiring leases from struggling big-box retailers, including recent deals with Joann and Party City.

The discount retailer is rapidly expanding its presence on Long Island, with 15 stores already open and plans for more as part of a national growth strategy to reach 2,000 locations. Its aggressive expansion has been fueled by the struggles of other major retailers, which have led to a significant increase in available leases.

Burlington's acquisition of the Melville Mall space is particularly notable given its proximity to another location that opened just two years ago. The company is also targeting other struggling retailers, including Bed Bath & Beyond and Party City. With 1,115 stores nationwide as of early May, Burlington aims to reach 2,000 total stores by 2028, a goal that would require a net increase of 500 locations between 2024 and 2028.
