B
ing Crosby's French Chateau-style estate in Hillsborough, California has sold for $25 million, a significant discount from its original asking price of $40 million. The property, which spans 5.38 acres and boasts 14,000 square feet, was built in 1929 and purchased by the legendary entertainer in the early 1960s as a gift for his wife Kathryn.
The estate remained in the Crosby family for six decades, with extensive renovations undertaken over the years. Kathryn commissioned hand-painted dining room walls from a prominent San Francisco artist, while Bing and his wife installed antiques from the collection of William Randolph Hearst, including a hand-carved wooden staircase banister and Georgian paneling from a 17th-century English manor home.
The property features 11 bedrooms, an impressive library, and a smoking room with a built-in bar. The estate also includes a separate wing for staff housing and a unique feature – the pool was filled in by the Crosby family to ensure the safety of their three young children.
After Bing's death in 1977, his heirs retained the property until Kathryn's passing in 2024. The sale ranks among the priciest ever in Hillsborough, with Compass agents Alex and Pierre Buljan stating that it places the home in the top five most expensive sales in the area's history. Despite the discounted price, the buyer – a local Hillsborough resident – plans to maintain the property's character and history.
