A
joint project between Related California and East Bay Asian Local Development is underway to build a complex at Oakland's Jack London Square. The five-story, 192-unit development will be situated on a block-size plot of land owned by Alameda County, bounded by Interstate 880, 5th Street, 4th Street, Broadway, and Franklin Street. Three interconnected L-shaped buildings will surround a central plaza featuring public art, seating, and a playground.
Building A, designed by Y.A. Studio, will contain 66 affordable apartments with varying income levels. The building will have 25 studios, 40 one-bedroom units, and two two-bedroom apartments, along with parking for 22 cars and 12 bicycles. Building B, also designed by Y.A. Studio and David Baker Architects, will feature 55 affordable apartments with unknown income levels. This building will include shops on the ground floor.
Building C, designed by an unspecified architect, will have 71 affordable apartments with varying income levels. The project will include parking for 40 cars and 28 bicycles, as well as 3,700 square feet of ground-floor shops. A later phase is planned to add two more apartment buildings and a market-rate complex at 401 Broadway.
Related California and East Bay Asian Local Development aim to streamline approvals using Senate Bill 35, which was not required for Building C, approved in August last year. The developers have not disclosed the project's cost or timeline.
