Canada's Forgotten Giant: A 15-Year Abandonment of Luxurious Proportions

The Peter Grant mansion: A glimpse of what could have been in Ontario's history.

T
he Peter Grant mansion, once envisioned as a luxurious lakeside palace, now sits abandoned on the shores of Lake Temiskaming in Ontario. The 65,000-square-foot estate was left unfinished after construction halted during the 2008 financial crisis. Designed by its former owner, forestry magnate Peter Grant, the home boasted features like a subterranean boathouse, an art gallery, and even a private golf course.

However, the grand designs were shattered when Grant's company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009. The mansion was left as an empty shell with half-finished walls and floors that never saw actual use. Despite its abandoned state, the property has gained fame as Canada's largest residence, but it's far from a dream home. Scattered construction debris and graffiti tell the story of a project left in ruins.

The massive home was listed for $25 million, even though it's not livable. A Toronto-based company eventually bought the estate, but little work has been done since, aside from security upgrades to prevent trespassing. The estimated cost to finish the property is around $1 million. Security cameras and fences were installed to stop curious onlookers from exploring the crumbling mansion.

The intrigue around the decaying home remains strong, with locals curious about its history and condition. "Folks come into town, and they want to know where it is and [ask if they can] go have a look," Temiskaming Shores mayor Jeff Laferriere said in 2023. The mansion's unfinished state has turned it into an eyesore for the local community, with graffiti increasingly covering both the exterior and interior walls.

A video tour of the mansion revealed that many of its exterior and interior fittings were near completion at the time of abandonment, including working utilities. However, the property's deterioration has left it as a monument to ambition gone wrong.
