enowned chef Masaharu Morimoto is reviving his culinary presence in New York City with a bold new venture. The celebrated Iron Chef has secured a 17,642-square-foot space at 1255 Broadway, marking a triumphant return to the Manhattan dining scene.
Located on the ground floor and basement of the office building at 1261 Broadway, this prime location is part of a revitalized corridor that's seen a surge in new hotels and restaurants. The area south of Herald Square has undergone a transformation, replacing wholesalers with trendy eateries and hospitality venues.
Morimoto's upcoming restaurant will occupy the entire ground floor and basement, boasting an impressive 17,642 square feet. With an asking rent of around $225 per square foot, this high-profile deal is set to be a major player in the city's culinary landscape.
While details about the concept are scarce, Morimoto has promised "a surprise" that will delight his guests. Sources indicate that the restaurant should open later this year, pending a smooth execution process.
This new venture marks a significant departure from Morimoto's previous Manhattan outpost at Chelsea Market, which closed in 2021 after 15 years of operation. The chef currently operates a small handroll bar at Time Out Market in DUMBO, but the long-term lease suggests a return to his signature full-scale menu and style.
The building, an 11-story structure, is undergoing a major renovation and upgrade. Formerly home to five stores, including costume jewelry shops, Morimoto's new space will be transformed into a vibrant culinary destination. Office tenants such as DBI Projects and Abrams Media will continue to occupy the upper floors of the building.
Morimoto's deal was brokered by Max Koeppel of Koeppel Rosen on behalf of the landlord, while Cushman & Wakefield's Steven Soutendijk and Amy Zhen represented the tenant – a partnership between Morimoto and Montclair Hospitality Group.
