ook County Board of Review commissioner Samantha Steele, 45, is facing a misdemeanor drunk-driving charge after two car accidents on Chicago's North Side. Police arrested her Sunday night in the 5000 block of North Ashland Avenue following a collision with a parked car and another vehicle after making a wide turn. According to the police report, Steele showed signs of intoxication, including bloodshot eyes and a strong odor of alcohol coming from her breath.
Steele refused sobriety tests, citing her right to a lawyer and self-incrimination. She was taken to the hospital for head pain after her arrest. Police allege she made derogatory comments towards an officer during her detention. Steele's court appearance is scheduled for December 27.
As a Board of Review commissioner, Steele plays a key role in deciding property tax appeals, including a high-profile case where she lowered the Chicago Bears' $38 million property tax assessment on the former Arlington International Racecourse. Her term has been marked by controversy, including criticism over her hiring of a former Indiana politician with a federal conviction and a whistleblower lawsuit filed by her aide alleging misconduct within her office.
