CoStar complaint resolved, Realtor.com allowed to use "Trust" branding

BBB National Programs rules in favor of Realtor.com, citing "reasonable basis" for "#1 Site Real Estate Professionals Trust" claim.

BB National Programs has ruled in favor of Realtor.com, deeming its claim to be the "#1 Site Real Estate Professionals Trust" reasonable based on a double-blind survey of 1,300 agents conducted in August 2023. The survey was deemed reliable support for the claim by the BBB's National Advertising Division (NAD). However, NAD warned that Realtor.com cannot rely solely on this survey and must retest its "most trusted" claims.

The NAD also recommended that Realtor.com disclose the date of the survey in close proximity to the main claim. Move, Realtor.com's parent company, has stated that it has conducted a newer survey in August 2024 and will update its citation accordingly.

This is not the first time Realtor.com has won against CoStar via BBB National Programs rulings. Earlier this year, NAD weighed in on another dispute between Move and CoStar regarding Homes.com's advertising claims. NAD recommended that Homes.com discontinue a claim about its monthly unique visitors, which was based on combined traffic from 16 other CoStar websites.

Realtor.com has welcomed the ruling, stating that it further cements their position as the most trusted site by real estate professionals. A spokesperson emphasized that trust is not just a tagline but drives their business and influences where customers invest their marketing dollars.

CoStar complaint resolved, Realtor.com retains 'Trust' branding in online real estate market.
