T
he Dallas City Council has approved a $19 million incentive package for the construction of a $55 million training facility and office space for the WNBA's Dallas Wings. The 1200 North Cockrell Hill Road site in West Dallas, zoned for industrial use but partially designated as Joey Georgusis Park, was chosen over other locations due to its proximity to the airport, development potential, and alignment with regional park needs.
The incentives will be paid out over three years from convention center construction funds. However, concerns have been raised about whether the facility can be completed before the 2026 WNBA season, when the Wings are set to move out of their current offices at UT Arlington's College Park Center. City officials had previously explored locations in downtown and the Cedars but ultimately chose the Cockrell Hill Road site.
Council members were divided on the decision, with some questioning whether alternative sites had been adequately considered and others opposing the use of convention center funds for a facility outside the city core. Despite these concerns, the vote reflects Dallas' efforts to retain major league teams as more franchises consider suburban locations.
