aniel Levin, the founder of Habitat Company and creator of the iconic East Bank Club, has passed away at 94. He died in his Winnetka home on Sunday, according to Crain's report. As a renowned developer, Levin left an indelible mark on Chicago's real estate landscape with transformative projects like Presidential Towers, Newberry Plaza, and South Commons.
Under his leadership, Habitat Company grew into one of the Midwest's largest development and property management companies, operating in multiple cities including Chicago, St. Louis, Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Tampa. Levin's legacy extends beyond his business accomplishments; he was a pioneer in affordable housing and senior living developments. His vision for the East Bank Club, launched in 1980, revolutionized the fitness industry, attracting 11,000 members and generating $65 million annually before the pandemic.
Levin's career spanned multiple industries, starting as a lawyer representing Herbert Greenwald's firm before pivoting to real estate development with McHugh Levin Associates. The company focused on innovative projects combining affordable housing, senior living, and retail. While not all his ventures were without challenges, Levin's impact on Chicago's real estate scene remains profound.
Habitat Company continues to honor Levin's legacy by carrying forward the mission he began, building on the strong foundation he created. His wife, Fay Hartog-Levin, a lawyer and former ambassador to the Netherlands, as well as their children and grandchildren, survive him.
