NCHORAGE, Alaska - Nine buildings in various Alaskan cities are being targeted by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) as part of its cost-cutting efforts. The buildings, located in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Palmer, Wasilla, and Seward, include facilities for the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, Geological Survey, and Forest Service.
According to DOGE, the total savings across Alaska are $13.7 million, with annual lease costs of $3.7 million. Nationally, the initiative claims to have saved over 9.5 million square feet and $468 million in lease costs, translating to a staggering $105 billion in overall savings through canceled building leases and contracts.
However, it's challenging to verify these numbers due to factors like market prices, locations, and building conditions. Notably, one building's option to renew its lease has expired, but the potential savings were still included in DOGE's calculations.
The buildings targeted by DOGE include:
* Geological Survey (Anchorage): 20,326 sqft, $2.2 million in total savings
* Forest Service (Anchorage): 27,000 sqft, $7.9 million in total savings
* Small Business Administration (Anchorage): 4,031 sqft, $87,371 in total savings
* Office of the Secretary (Anchorage): 14,805 sqft, no total savings
* Natural Resources Conservation Service (Fairbanks and Wasilla): various square footage, $562,242 to $84,054 in total savings
* Rural Housing Service (Palmer): 19,716 sqft, $2.8 million in total savings
* National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (Seward and Juneau): various square footage, $24,554 to $1,710 in total savings
