Ex-Attorney Charged with $30K Real Estate Escrow Embezzlement

Defendant accused of stealing $30K from escrow account in Suffolk home sale.

A
former Great Neck attorney has been charged with stealing $30,000 from an escrow account tied to a terminated home sale in 2024. Marco Materassi, of Dania Beach, Florida, was charged with third-degree grand larceny by Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney.

The alleged theft occurred when Materassi failed to return the down payment to the buyer after the contract was terminated. An investigation revealed that he had spent the money on personal and unrelated business expenses instead of returning it to the buyer as agreed upon.

Tierney stated, "Our legal system relies on attorneys acting ethically and honestly in their work." He emphasized his office's commitment to investigating and prosecuting attorneys who violate their oath and engage in unlawful enrichment.

Materassi is due back in court on August 1. The DA's office is urging potential victims to come forward by contacting (631) 853-4626.
