Elon Musk's Real Estate Portfolio: A Glimpse into His Multimillion-Dollar Properties

E
lon Musk made headlines in 2020 when he announced he was selling almost all of his properties. He had amassed a real-estate portfolio in California in a short amount of time, owning multiple houses in the same neighborhood at one point. Musk lived lavishly, with multimillion-dollar mansions and amenities like pools and tennis courts. He had a net worth of $252.6 billion as of September 2024, allowing him to own a handful of properties. However, he decided to downsize and sell most of his properties, stating that possessions weigh him down.

Musk initially rented a seven-bedroom mansion in Bel Air, California, starting in 2010. He bought the $17 million, 16,251-square-foot property in 2012. The house features a two-story library, a pool, tennis court, and views overlooking Bel-Air Country Club. In 2020, he listed the mansion for $30 million and sold it to Chinese billionaire William Ding.

Musk also bought a historic property on the same street as his other Bel Air mansion, which was once owned by Gene Wilder. He bought the four-bedroom, 2,750-square-foot house for $6.75 million in 2013. The property has wood-beamed ceilings, multiple fireplaces, a pool, gardens, and views of the nearby country club and ocean. Musk sold the property to screenwriter Elizabeth Hunter and her husband Jordan Walker-Pearlman in 2020 for $7 million. Not only did Musk sell the property at a discounted price but also provided financing. However, the couple fell behind on payments, leading to a foreclosure notice in July 2021. The home is currently listed for $12.95 million.

In 2015, Musk bought another Bel Air property for $20 million, a 7,000-square-foot house with six bedrooms. He also bought an unfinished mansion in Bel Air for $24.25 million a couple of years later. Musk listed these four homes for a collective $62.5 million in 2020 and sold them approximately six months later.

Musk also owned a huge property in the Bay Area, a 16,000-square-foot mansion in Hillsborough, California, which he bought for $23.4 million in 2017. The Mediterranean-style mansion has ten bedrooms, views of the San Francisco Bay, and sits on 47 acres. Musk originally listed the property for $37.5 million and later reduced the price to $32 million, where it eventually found a buyer.

A BI review of court records in Musk's custody dispute with former girlfriend Grimes revealed that Musk owned a "secret" house in Austin, Texas. Although BI is withholding the address for privacy reasons, Zillow says the house is nearly 7,000 square feet and was built in 2017. A couple bought the house in 2018 after it was listed for $4.5 million. It was resold in 2022 but never listed publicly, records showed.
