Fashion Mogul Buys NYC Penthouse from Financier Jim Chanos for $19M

Luxury aerie at 3 E. 75th St. sold in private transaction.

O
n Manhattan's Upper East Side, a symbol of the Gilded Age's enduring presence has emerged. Financier Jim Chanos, known for his prescient short-selling of Enron and Tesla, has parted ways with his majestic penthouse triplex atop a 50-foot-wide, early 20th-century mansion at 3 E. 75th St.

The sleek modern residence, nestled just steps from Central Park off Fifth Avenue, boasts an impressive 7,324 square feet spread across three floors. After first hitting the market for $34 million in 2019, Chanos purchased the home for $20 million in 2008, according to records. The sale price of $19 million was a significant markdown.

A stylish fashion mogul, who has requested anonymity for security reasons, is set to move into the penthouse with their family. The discreet transaction was handled off-market by Deborah Grubman's team at the Corcoran Group, who had previously listed the property for $19.75 million in 2024. Hannah Bomze of Casa Blanca represented the buyer.

"It's a truly special apartment," Bomze said, highlighting the unique combination of location and building width that makes it feel like a townhouse in the sky. "The layout is very boutique-like, with a sense of downtown-uptown charm."

Designed by Thad Hayes, the penthouse features an open dining/entertaining area, a modern galley-style chef's kitchen, and a walk-in wine fridge. The primary bedroom, located on the lower level, boasts a spa-like bath, a walk-in closet, and additional outdoor space.

The property also includes three bedrooms, 3½ bathrooms, and 2,800 square feet of outdoor space, including terraces on all three floors. However, it's the top two floors that truly shine with their spectacular views overlooking Central Park.

"This is an extraordinary opportunity for someone to own a piece of Manhattan history," Bomze said, underscoring the penthouse's unique character and charm.
